Austin Korean community shares concerns

AUSTIN (KXAN) - The United States is sending an aircraft carrier to the waters off of South Korea, a move aimed to prevent further conflict between North and South Korea.

The aircraft carrier USS George Washington left Japan today for joint exercises with South Korea. Tensions in that region remain high after the North shelled a South Korean island yesterday - killing two marines and two civilians.

Dozens of houses and military facilities were destroyed or damaged and shaken civilians continue to evacuate to the mainland.

UT graduate student Jinwoo Lee is studying sociology at Texas and keeping a close eye on what is happening in his homeland.

"We don't want to have a war there - we like to solve the situation with a peaceful manner," said Lee, whose family was deeply affected by the Korean War.

"Grandfather and grandmother both were killed by North Korea," said Lee. "My Dad become an orphan since then and was raised by the relatives."

Lee is keeping in contact with his parents, who still live in South Korea.

"They seem to be very worried with the same reason that I had - that the land of Korea had been attacked - that had not happened in so long," said Lee.

The United States has more than 28,000 troops deployed in South Korea along with 50 U.S. Navy vessels.

ACL photographer shares studio memories

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Every photograph hanging in the lobby of the iconic Austin City Limits studio 6A is a memory for photographer Scott Newton.

"There's Johnny Cash- I call that shot, Mt. Rushmore, because it should be there," said Newton pointing to the black and white photo of Cash that hangs towering over the lobby.

Newton began shooting the ACL acts in 1978, four years after Willie Nelson played the inaugural show in 1974. He said he was able to get the good shots because the lights blinded the performers, who could not see from the stage that he was taking their photograph.

"They don't know they're being shot and so I get all these very intimate photographs of performing musicians," he said.

Newton said the old studio represents different memories for different people. To him, it is the place where he has done his life's work.

"I have favorite shots," he said. "The shot of Ray Charles there, always its one of the best. I get new favorites- this is one of my new favorites," he said pointing to a color photo of Norah Jones. "Its such an understated shot it just grows and grows."

Newton is excited about the move to the Moody Theatre, an 800 seat studio inside the new W Hotel in Downtown Austin.

"There's nothing wrong with this place, I love it very much, but you outgrow something sometimes and we've really outgrown this spot," he said. "This is the end of an episode, or a volume, or whatever- but its not the end of the show."

The next live performance will take place in the new studio in early March. The name of the performer has not been released.
