AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin police arrested a man suspected of attacking and robbing an elderly woman outside a grocery store.

Officers found 26-year-old Elmer Earl, Jr., Saturday evening, just a few blocks away from the HEB at Hancock Center in central Austin, they say he tried to escape the scene after the spotted him walking off the nearby Hancock golf course.

Police were investigating the area after a 66-year-old woman reported a man who approached her in the store's parking lot, asked for directions, then grabbed her purse, knocked her down, and ran away.

She gave them a description and after about 20 minutes, a detective spotted Elmer Earl.

When Earl saw the detective he tried to run away but police caught up with him. They took him back to the scene where the victim identified him as the man who attacked her. Police say Earl also had several of the victim's credit cards and business cards on him when they caught him.
