AUSTIN (KXAN) - A Thanksgiving evening fire in central Austin sent two women to the hospital.

Austin Firefighters responded to a fire at a home at 4007 Avenue B at approximately 5:30 p.m.

The first firefighters on scene saw flames shooting from a second story bedroom.? Fire could still be seen several minutes later when a KXAN photojournalist arrived at the home.?

Firefighters rescued a 90-year-old woman from inside the home.? AFD says that two other people escaped from the house.

One person who escaped was a 62-year-old woman who suffered severe burns to her face and throat.? EMS transported her to the hospital.? Janelle Boone, a spokesperson for the Austin-Travis County EMS said that the woman is listed in critical condition.

The 90-year-old woman was transported to the hospital for evaluation. Her status is unknown.

The other individual who escaped is a man who refused treatment on the scene.

AFD Lieutenant Palmer Buck said the home was an older structure that had been renovated.? Buck said that the flames spread into hidden spaces, and that made it harder for firefighters to put the fire out.

Investigators say the fire started because combustible materials were placed too close to a wood stove.

Buck said the fire underscores the importance of having a working smoke detector in your home.

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Felicita Fisher, 81, who was run over in her own bed when a suspected drunk driver crashed into her house off FM 812 earlier this month , is now recovering at a South Austin rehabilitation facility.

"I'm feeling a whole lot better, better than I was," said Fisher while holding her 2-year-old chihuahua Sunshine in her lap.?

Fisher said she was sleeping with Sunshine when she heard what she thought was a plane crash.? It was actually a pick up truck crashing into her house.

Sunshine was also thrown from the bed and found on the front porch.

"The bed was shattered, completely shattered," Fisher explained.

Police arrested Gabino Lopez, 54, for intoxicated assault with a vehicle, causing serious bodily injury.

Fisher suffered a broken leg and hip and was taken to UMC Brackenridge where she immediately underwent surgery.

"I wasn't scared," Fisher said.

An usual sleeping habit likely saved Fisher's life.? At the time, she wasn't sleeping with her feet at the foot of the bed, but with her head at the foot.?

She believes something else saved her life.

"It was a premonition I had had that something bad was going to happen.? I didn't think it would happen that quick," Fisher said.

Fisher said she dreamed of her father who told her to make room in the bed for him.? She told KXAN that is when she repositioned herself.

Fisher's son David told KXAN his mother will spend the next 60 days at the rehab center.? He brings Sunshine to visit her once a day.

"I'm conquering each step, so, I feel that I am doing really good," Fisher said.? "I am progressing really rapidly so that is for my benefit."

David said his mother's home cannot be repaired and will be demolished.? When she is well, she will likely move in with him.

Fisher said she wishes she could be well enough to cook Thanksgiving dinner and be "useful" to her family.

Lopez is now out on $20,000 bond and is expected to make be in court for a hearing tomorrow.
