Austin Korean community shares concerns

AUSTIN (KXAN) - The United States is sending an aircraft carrier to the waters off of South Korea, a move aimed to prevent further conflict between North and South Korea.

The aircraft carrier USS George Washington left Japan today for joint exercises with South Korea. Tensions in that region remain high after the North shelled a South Korean island yesterday - killing two marines and two civilians.

Dozens of houses and military facilities were destroyed or damaged and shaken civilians continue to evacuate to the mainland.

UT graduate student Jinwoo Lee is studying sociology at Texas and keeping a close eye on what is happening in his homeland.

"We don't want to have a war there - we like to solve the situation with a peaceful manner," said Lee, whose family was deeply affected by the Korean War.

"Grandfather and grandmother both were killed by North Korea," said Lee. "My Dad become an orphan since then and was raised by the relatives."

Lee is keeping in contact with his parents, who still live in South Korea.

"They seem to be very worried with the same reason that I had - that the land of Korea had been attacked - that had not happened in so long," said Lee.

The United States has more than 28,000 troops deployed in South Korea along with 50 U.S. Navy vessels.

Community gardens sprouting up in yards

If mowing the lawn is too much of a hassle a new organization is encouraging residents to grow community gardens.

"We have an enormous front yard and we didn't know what we wanted to do with it," said Joshua Merritt, homeowner.

Merritt thought about landscaping - but when he heard about Urban Patchwork Neighborhood Farms he changed his mind.

"We use yards where people don't want to garden on their own, or don't want to mow anymore or pay someone to mow," said Paige Hill, Executive Director Urban Patchwork Neighborhood Farms. "We come in and turn that into growing space for food."

Paige Hill otherwise known as Farmer Paige started the organization and turned her backyard in the Skyview neighborhood in Central Austin into a large garden.

There's also chickens for fresh eggs. But the idea for creating these gardens is to bring neighbors together.

The landowner gets a portion of the harvest as well as volunteers who help tend the garden.

"We set up a farm stand in the neighborhood so anyone can come along and volunteer for their veggies or buy their veggies," said Hill.

"A lot of these neighborhoods in Austin are becoming more in the true sense of the word," said Merritt. "More and more young families are looking at this as a place to raise their children."

And that's led to a new push to get neighbors to grow more than just vegetables but grow a sense of community.

"How much more local of eating can you do than something that came from your house, your yard, or from someone in your neighborhood that's the beauty of it," said Merritt.

Right now there are 10 Urban Patchwork farms in six neighborhoods within the city of Austin.

Corvallis wins "Green Power community year EPA '.

Corvallis received an award 2010 Green Power of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in recognition of its commitment and contribution to help advance the development of
market voluntary green power in the country.
Director of public works Steve Rogers accepted the award on behalf of the Corvallis community tonight (20 October) in Portland, with a demonstration held in conjunction with the Conference 2010 renewable energy markets.
In 2001, Corvallis city has become one of the first municipalities in the country of purchase of renewable energy, sign for 100 kwh per month – about 1.5% of the electrical charge of the Organization - through
Program blue sky Pacifique.En 2005 power, the city has increased its purchase approximately 7% and became the first city on the West Coast to receive the designation of the EPA as a community of green energy.Adding other purchasers of green power Corvallis (Oregon State University, residents and businesses), total electricity generated from green energy community is now over 100 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) or near 15%.
Green energy is electricity generated from renewable resources such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, biomass and hydro.These resources produce electricity with a net zero carbon dioxide emissions increase while being better for the environment that traditionnelle.énergie green power generation sources also purchases support the development of new sources of renewable energy production throughout the country.
